A Poker Glossary for Beginners: Every Term in One Sentence

Not understanding table jargon is one of a beginner's biggest hurdles. This glossary explains the most common poker terms as briefly as possible, ordered by "flow of a hand + common concepts," so you can look them up as you play.

Position and roles

• Button (dealer position): the marker that rotates each hand; acts last post-flop, the most advantageous position.
• Blinds: forced bets by the two players left of the button — small blind and big blind.
• Pot: the chips built up from everyone's bets, which the winner takes.

Stages of a hand

• Preflop: the first betting round after receiving your 2 hole cards and before community cards appear.
• Flop: the first 3 community cards revealed at once.
• Turn: the 4th community card.
• River: the 5th and final community card.
• Showdown: the final comparison of hands to decide the winner.

Actions

• Check: don't bet and pass the action along (only when no one has bet).
• Call: match the current bet.
• Raise: increase on top of someone else's bet.
• Fold: give up your cards and exit the hand.
• All-in: put in all your chips.

Hand strength and probability

• Hole cards: the 2 cards only you can see.
• Draw: an unmade hand one card short of a flush or straight.
• Outs: the remaining cards that complete your hand (see pot odds and outs).
• Kicker: the extra card used to break ties when hand types match.
• Nuts: the best possible hand on the current board.

Playing styles

• Tight: playing only a few strong hands.
• Loose: playing many hands.
• Aggressive: betting and raising a lot.
• Passive: checking and calling a lot.
